Wearing a pendant, locket or other keepsake around your neck only works well when you’ve combined it with a chain that looks visually dazzling or appealing. But it also has to be sturdy enough to support the weight of the pendant and comfortable enough to wear without pulling hairs from your neck or face. For such dilemmas, our earlier blog posts provide great thorough advice. We highly recommend to read the following blog posts in supplement to this blog to ensure you’re able to match the right chain for any attachment:

How to select a Sterling Silver Chain for your Pendant

But what about once you’ve solved the questions of chain style, strength and comfort? Were you forgetting about anything else? Surely by now you've checked all that you'd needed? Well, it’s usually something you might only realise after purchasing your chain. As you have your new chain in your hand, you'll start to thread your brand new chain through your pendant, locket or charm. You're excited to get it onto your pendant and wear it for a night out, but as you start to pass the end of the chain through the pendant, alas it gets stuck at the entry point of the pendant hole! You might be tempted to think it just needs a good push, but by doing that you'll risk damage the end of the chain leading to unsightly dents.

So you've probably gathered that what you should be considering when attaching a pendant to a chain are those chain ends and we’re here to guide you through this so you have the best chance of getting it right the first time around to avoid unnecessary expenses on returning misfitting items.

On this journey, you’ll just need to be aware of a couple of parts of the chain and one part of your pendant. So let's get started..

Know the bail and you’ll never fail

As we’d highlighted in our blog post How to select a Sterling Silver Chain for your Pendant , pendants with their varying shapes and sizes, have been designed with either simple or clever ways to sit onto your chain. Some have simple loops at the top of the pendant whereas others are in built into the pendant itself. This loop is what’s known as a bail. Most times it’s this small area of space where the chain pass through and eventually will occupy. So the starting point is to measure this area of space where the chain will thread through.

How do I take a measurement of a pendant bail for my chain?

Specifically, you need to measure the inner area. This is known as taking the internal measurement. Most pendant bails will have a small area of space and obtaining that measurement is best done by taking this in millimetres. Obtaining that measurement in millimetres will ensure you are far more accurate and more likely to get the right fitting chain. In doing that you’ll have to measure the length and the width. For most bails it may be a round or oval shape or slightly unusual.. But you may have a less uncommon like an inverse triangle.

Lets look at some examples of these common types of bail from a side and front profile:

NARROW INSERT | BEAD STYLE BAIL | COMMON STYLE BAIL

Narrow Insert

You might find with certain style of floating pendant designs, the bail to thread your chain through is less obvious and stylishly concealed. As the Full View of Pendant the chain will thread into the body of the pendant itself at the top. As the Top View of Pendant diagram shows, the 2 rectangular white spaces in the middle are usually narrow. Here you’ll need to pass the chain in through one and again back up and through a second time. So long as your chain links can pass through, most of the time a Wired Cap ended chain will get through more often than other styles of chain End Caps. Simply measure the width and length of those gaps at the top of the pendant and ensure your chain links and end caps are narrower for the best fit.

Bead ‘Bail’

A popular style of pendant, it shares an identical appearance to many beaded charms that you can slide over snake bracelets or bangles. The guidance for both are not too different either and whilst a bail most times refers to a separate attachment to the design of the pendant, here the bail isn’t separate and again is integrated into the pendant itself, to give a fashionably popular floating appearance. Pendant styles such as these are great because the theme of the pendant, in this case heart isn’t distracted with a separate bail. The position of the pendant with this sort of integrated bail in most cases ensures the pendant/charm doesn’t move around or get tangled in a chain/bracelet, but instead just slight from left to right. Most of the time these are round in shape and you’ll only need to take one measurement: the diameter of the circle. As usual to get you chain through ensure your chain links and end caps are narrower for the best fit. You’ll find that most types of End Cap will get through if the size is right and you shouldn’t face a trickier time getting your End Cap of your chain through the pendant or charm unlike the Narrow Insert bail we’ve shown you in the first example.

Common Bail

Now on to the most common type of Bail. Usually positioned at the top of a pendant, some types will be fixed into position and others can move around a little. The above image features just the bail on its own without the main pendant area in focus. You may find that shapes vary at the side view from upside down triangles, or more well proportioned shapes such as ovals, circles or rectangles.

The Chain: What you need to measure to ensure it passes through your pendant

Now you have an idea of that measurement you’ll need to take for your pendant, the next step is to ensure that the chain is narrower/less than that area of space so it can dive through.

So, once you’ve unhooked your clasp and you lay your chain out on the table it will have three parts:

1. Chain Links
2. Cap End (also known as the hook end)
3. Clasp End

For each of those let’s explain what they are and what’s important about them for the burning question: how do I fit my pendant on a chain ?

The Chain Links

Forming the main part of the chain, the links have various patterns and sizes. Some are more flatter in one aspect like a curb chain, whereas others are more evenly proportioned like a a box chain or a ball chain. You can see the different types of chain styles in our guide here

Why are the Chain Links important when matching a pendant and chain?

Essentially, the links of the chain have to physically fit through the pendant bail comfortably. But if the links occupy a larger area than the inside of the bail then you won’t be able to get the pendant to sit on the chain.

What is the Cap End of a chain?

The opposite end to where the clasp is attached is known the hook end or the cap end. It’s called the hook end because this is where you can hook the clasp onto. At the same time it is known as the cap end because it covers and seals of the last link of the chain. The cap itself is designed to keep the last link of the chain neat and tidy and depending upon the chain are of different shapes and sizes. On a practical level a good cap will allow you enough space to grip the chain steadily between your finger tips to fasten the clasp up. If you’re fastening your chain behind your neck without being able to see, the cap being of a different shape and texture to the links themselves should allow you to also feel where the end of the chain is and where you’ll need to hook the clasp on to.

Why is the Cap End so important when matching a pendant and chain?

It’s this cap at the end of the chain which you’ll grip between your fingers and thread through your pendant bail, itself known as an End Cap. Depending upon the pendant design some might term the pendant bail as the ‘loop’ because it just looks like a loop. It’s vital that you take know measurement of the cap because it will be the first thing to pass through the bail of your pendant, followed by the chain links themselves. Since it is a 3D object, it will have a width, length and depth. The width and depth are the important measurements to know for getting it to pass through your pendant bail. They must be less than the the width and length of the inside of the pendant bail.

Types of End Cap

Our chains have several designs of End Cap, with each one suitable for specific shapes of chain link:

CURVED END CAP | ROUND END CAP | FLAT END CAP (large) | FLAT END CAP(small) | WIRED END CAP

Along with each chain End we've provided you with 3 views starring with an overview, front view and finally a side profile view.

If my chain has a certain type of End Cap fitted to it, how do I know it will fit through my pendant?

To ensure this fits through your pendant you'll just need to know the width of the cap as shown by W and the depth of the cap shown by D which will usually be in millimetres (mm). If these are less mm than those of your pendant bail, the cap will get through the pendant bail comfortably.

Curved End Cap

The Curved End Cap is similar to Small and Large Flat End Caps. It acts as a pincer as it hold the chain steady between it's grip and is bonded to the chain link with Sterling Silver solder.
You're surrounded! Well if your chain is a Snake chain or Ball chain with an equal sides all around, it really will be! A round cap is nicely suited with such chain links as the underside of the round cap surface is able to touch every side of the link. This allows the solder to bond with as much of the link as possible. A bit like a hand to a glove, it’s a perfect that results in a stronger bond and less likely to break. This round end cap is also smooth, easy to grip and can roll between your fingers and to help you find the hole when you're fastening the clasp on to the end of your chain.. Fitted to our Sterling Silver Ball Chain Snake Chains & Spiga / Wheat Chains

A common style of end cap, the larger Flat End Cap is different only to the Small Flat End Cap because of it being wider in its width. You’ll see this on chain styles that usually are flat when you lay the, on a surface: Curb Chains, Figaro Chains. It’s wider width is suited to chains with a wider surface like our Sterling Silver 5.4mm Curb Chain, 5.7mm Figaro Chain & 6.9mm Mariner Chain. The principle as with all flat caps allow this shape to bond to as much of the link surface and designed to make it easy for you to grip the end of the chain and fasten it with the clasp. Aesthetically you’ll also find any hallmark stamps clearly marked here.

A smaller Flat End Cap acts the same way as it’s wider big brother except in shape it is slightly more narrower. It’s shape is designer to act like a pincer to capture the link. Best suited to chains with flat surface or flat shape once soldered it will bond to the link to ensure the link doesn’t move around. Having a link move around can be a nuisance when fastening your chain, but you’ll usually only find this problem with chains that substitute having a proper end cap with just a plain round ring. Some of our chains that have the flat cap include: Sterling Silver 1.5mm Box Chain, Sterling Silver 2.4mm Curb Chain & Sterling Silver 1.5mm Cable Chain.

Made from Sterling silver Wire and bent into a ‘O’ whilst not technically a cap, it is the end of a chain where the clasp can be hooked on to. It’s usually better suited to the finest of chains where a cap isn’t practically attachable like our Fine Sterling Silver 0.8mm Curb Chain . Simply measure the width to fit this in. Sometimes you may think you’ll be able to adjust the wire and squash it to make it fit your pendant bail. However, it’s always best to consult a jewellery using professional tools. Silver is a soft metal and the thickness of these wires if over applying force can result in damage.

What is the Clasp End of the chain?

Most times, it looks identical to the cap end, but with the attachment of the clasp. Here’s a photo of the different types of the clasp end of the chain. Some feature round spring clasps, some oval shaped and some pear shaped, sometimes varying in size too!

Can I thread the chain through my pendant by putting the Clasp End through the bail first?

Of course you can do this so long as your pendant bail is larger than the clasp. But with fine dainty pendants you’ll often find you’ll only be able to fit the chain through the Cap End because it is narrower in size.

The Best Types of Necklace Chain that won't pull out your hair

You’ve probably been in this scenario: you’ve showered and freshened up ready to go out on your daily routine, an evening or a special day out. You’re all dressed and almost ready to head out the door with just the final pièce de résistance left to put on in the form of your favourite fashion accessory- your necklaces, chains or bracelets.

Your beautiful, dazzling jewellery made with Chain links are ready to put on around your neck or your wrists. But you’re wincing in anticipation that your hairs- whether fine or long, are about to be jerked out at the base of your neck or wrist. Just the mere thought of it can be enough to make your eyes water right?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or woman and you wear chain links on your neck or your wrist, when the links are brushing with the hairs on either of those areas on your body the annoying sensation are along the same lines. We’ve all been there and it’s enough to make you feel why you’d ever bothered.

Sound familiar?

It probably will unless you’re naturally endowed with a superhuman gene that has endowed you with life-long baby soft skin on your wrists or neck or you’re a super yogi that has mastered the mind receptivity to pain. But for the rest of us, who aren’t as gifted and don’t want to spoil the start of a great day ahead, we’ve got the perfect antidote in the form of our latest buying guide: our top suggested styles of Sterling Silver Chain link that won’t pull on your hair.

Here we’ll advise on what parts of the chain can pull on your hair, which specific chains are just serial culprits and those which are the super hero “go to” styles.

Why do certain types of Necklace Chain pull on hairs and others don’t?

Whilst our hair on our neck tends to be thinner for both men and women, versus those on our wrist thicker, especially for men, it’s natural that some chains styles will bring about the pulling sensation for finer hairs than thicker hairs.

Many a time however the pattern of the link is responsible in combination with the size of the links. Specifically, Chain links that have the ability to form a pincer position to trap the hair are the most notorious. Pair this with a physical aspect: if the width or thickness of the chain links are similar to the thickness of your hairs the more likely to catch.

Which Necklace Chain Types are more likely to pull on your hair?

Sterling Silver Omega Chain Link

The Omega Chain link isn’t generally a favoured style to wear daily but for occasional wear and mostly styled just at the base of the neck. The style of link pattern allows for a narrow gap and when the chain flexes, can form a pincer to pinch fine hairs and sometimes the skin depending upon the variety of omega link. Variations include flat omega links as well as the round omega links- closer to snake chain in shape. Dare we say it but some find it easy to remember this chain by calling it the “OW!...Mega!” Chain. Omega chains however have a mirror finish unlike other chains and most of the time are worn just above the collar bone. They tend to catch the finger hairs so if you’re a lady a finer omega chain may be better than thicker styles owing to less area of the link coming into contact with the skin.

Sterling Silver Snake Chain Link – Classic.

The classic Snake Chain Link style is a sleek style of chain. It has the ability to give the appearance of a thin, seamless stream of silver. The gaps in this style of chain are designed to be minimal to give way to the luxurious shiny appearance, much like the omega chain. However, those gaps can catch finer hairs.

But if you are keen on the Snake Chain style, we’d recommend opting for the newer style “Real Snake Chains”. With the design minimally different, the snake effect is almost identical albeit with much reduced friction.

Sterling Silver Herringbone Chains

Wow, what a beauty and a classic. Herringbone chains feature a beautiful pattern very similar to those scales found on a tropical fish. But the generally flat design of these chains means all of the chain touches the skin. With several gaps small gaps between the patterns in the chain, this is a perfect hair trap.

What parts of a Necklace Chain can pull on hair?

The most obvious are of course the links. The second being the clasp and sometimes it’s jump ring. Lastly the ends of the chain - often known as the caps - where the clasp itself is attached and it’s opposite end where the clasp is hooked onto.

For the bulk of this post we will however cover the Link characteristics, specifically starting with the style of link and then the size of the link.

Which Necklace Chain Types won’t pull on your hair?

The vast majority of chains usually won’t catch hairs and so whilst we won’t write a complete list of these chains, here are our top suggestions for chain styles that won’t catch hair whether fine or long.

Sterling Silver Ball Bead Chains

The majority of good Sterling Silver Ball Bead Chains are made with solid, round, smooth highly polished links. The nature of the surface lack any gaps. As a result of this the links have no where to hook onto. Regardless of fine hairs or longer hairs Bead Chains whether being rounded or oval in shape are the friendliest and most comfortable chain to wear. As the size of the bead links increase or decrease also make no difference either.

Looking to buy a Ball Bead Chain Necklace? See the Chain Collection Here

Looking to buy a Ball Bead Bracelet? See the Bracelet Collection Here

Sterling Silver Box Chains

A highly popular and recommended chain link style, whether the classic standard box chain or the rounded box chain – it is a timeless cubed shape that sits well on necks and wrists comfortably. Whilst there are gaps in between the links, they’re unlikely to pull on the hair because the size of the gaps are proportionately wider allowing any hair to pass through. Generally the edges and corners of box chains aren’t sharp either.

Looking to buy a Box Chain Necklace? See the Chain Collection Here

Looking to buy a Box Bracelet? See the Bracelet Collection Here

Sterling Silver Curb Chains, Sterling Silver Figaro Chains and Sterling Silver Marina Chains.

All three are similar in class of their formation. At the heart of these chains are a Curb Link. The Curb link is seen in the figaro chain with the addition of one link in the pattern of three being elongated. Whilst the Marina chain is almost the same as a Curb Chain in its shape but with a vertical bar in the centre. All three styles of chain regardless of their dimensions: fine, medium or thick are amongst the most hassle free and comfortable to wear during the day and even at night when sleeping. Whether as a chain around the neck or on the wrist – these styles also are unlikely to catch on any fabrics from your clothes either. It’s probably why it has endured as a timeless classic and is still a highly popular pattern of link.

Sterling Silver Cable Chains and Sterling Silver Anchor Chains

Again highlighting the link shape and formation will quickly make it easy to understand why Cable and Anchor chains which are almost identical won’t pull your hair. Each chain link style is crafted simply by shaping a rounded wire into an oval shape. The process is repeated for the next link and paired with the first one. Each link is identical to the other in every aspect. Cable Chains being usually finer and Anchor Chains a thicker with the addition of a flat diamond cut surface. But the point being that there is virtually not much hairs of any thickness whether on or near the neck or the wrist can pinch. The surfaces of the links are completely smooth much like the Ball Bead Chain and the gaps in between each oval link large enough to hair not to get caught up in painfully.

In general as a rule of thumb, bolder thicker and larger linked chains with simple shapes are least likely to pull on your hairs. Those with intricate designs will vary. Some intricate designs if crafted properly without sharp sections carefully considerate of the wearer with the area exposed to a person’s skin smooth are perfect. One example is our exclusive Sterling Silver Twisted Foxtail Chain. On appearance it is highly intricate. In fact we’d go so far as to say as one of the pinnacles of chain link craftsmanship. Yet to the touch this chain retains a frictionless, textured feel with the diamond cut links and weave like pattern. Crafted with the aim of stylishness and practicality should be the ultimate balanced approach for any chain link style.

Anchor, Marina, Rope: 3 types of Symbolic Chain Link Styles for Water lovers

There is often associated an unspeakable yet therapeutic effect that comes from merely visiting places where large areas of water reside, whether that be lakes, rivers, or oceans. In earlier times prior to travel by air, much discovery was encountered by sailing on ships, boats, submarines and other types of sea vessels. Today we also have the added luxury of incorporating travelling on water through hobbies including canoeing, diving, rafting, rowing, yachting and more. If you have an affection for nautical themed jewellery whatever the reason, our collection of Sterling Silver Chains and Bracelets are certain to keep your style Anchored when you are on your travels.

It’s always Plain Sailing with our Anchor Chain and Bracelet Collection!

What’s an Anchor?

An anchor is mostly known for being a large piece of metal that is heavy and shapely enough to steady all sizes of vessel. The word ‘Anchor’ itself originated from a historic Greek word άγκυρα, pronounced “ankyra” which means “hook”[1] – something that closely describes the shape of those pointed curved sections of an anchor. Whether it’s a Nuclear Powered Submarine, large cruise ships, yachts or fishing boats, the Anchor will always be connected to either a Chain or a Rope that will allow its strong steadying properties to be deployed and then reeled back in when Sailing on.

Anchor Chains themselves are as crucial as an Anchor itself and are crafted to ensure maximum strength under extreme pressure. It’s uncomplicated solid link appearance certainly reflect that. Anchor Chains are used whenever something needs to be steadied and if you’re into Climbing or abseiling as a hobby you’ll also see their use here too.

In Jewellery-wear the selection of Sterling Silver Anchor Link Chains and Bracelets mirror those real life Anchor chains used for nautical purposes. But they also retain a charismatic and long lasting appeal when crafted from precious metal.

So, what is the pattern of an Anchor Chain?

At the core, you’ll find Sterling Silver Anchor Chains are made from links that are crafted with a thick wire, bent into a characteristic oblong shape. The link formation is simple and consistently symmetrical as once one link is sealed shut, another identical link is attached to it and the process repeated until the ideal length is achieved. A thicker wire is what ultimately gives it inner strength. In Sterling Silver Chain terms the thicker wire is what differentiates an Anchor Chain from a Trace Chain which uses thinner wire and an almost identical rounded shape.

What varieties of the Anchor Chain Link are there?

Within themselves the Anchor Link Chains have evolved into several varieties, just as classic styles such as the Box Chain have too. There is however a big difference between the Anchor Chain and other Necklace Chain styles. Anchor Chains are crafted based on those real life uses as on sea vessels. This is opposed to a Box/Venetian Chain, which is really only recognised within the scope of jewellery. Don’t know what a Box Chain is? Read our Blog post What is a Box Chain Necklace? that reveals the largest and inspiring Box Chain and Bracelet collection in the UK.

Below you’ll find a description the varieties of Anchor Chain that exist alongside a photograph. Hopefully you’ll be quick to recognise the differences and similarities…

1. Rounded Anchor Chain

As mentioned above made with a thick wider bent into an oval shape with rounded surfaces. It is as round on the inside of the link as the outside of the link. This is as opposed to Oval Belcher Chains where you’ll find either the inner or outer area of the link flat, but not both together.

2. Flat Anchor Chain with Flat Diamond Cut links

Similar to the above Rounded Anchor Chain, albeit the head of the Link has been faceted with a diamond tipped tool to remove the Rounded part of the link. This gives a flat highly polished surface

3. Angled Anchor Chain with Angled Diamond Cut links

Similar to the Rounded Anchor Chain, however the links have been faceted with a diamond tipped tool on the corners of the link as pictured. The result of the angled diamond cut links is somewhat similar to a v shaped when viewed from a specific angle.

4. Flat Anchor Chain with Diamond Cut links and Bar

5. Angled Anchor Chain with a Bar and Angled diamond cut links

How Pairing Jewellery with Anchor Chains can be stylish and meaningful?

Whilst the Anchor is more commonly a metal hook shaped object, in olden times a stone was used with some rope and then placed to steady a ship. But whether it is a stone or an anchor, the purpose was the same – to keep the sea vessel grounded and fixed in place. This symbolic purpose of the Anchor chain that holds something in place can also be used with pendants and other keepsakes to instil a sense of keeping us emotionally centred or deep rooted to people, places, or memories that the attached jewellery will have. Those items worn on the chain may be not necessarily have to be Anchor Shaped pendants, but also Personalised Lockets, Heart pendants or personalised name tag pendants. If you are gifting or own a Nautical Compass Pendants and combine it with an Anchor chain it’s a great combination to symbolise themes of providing a steadied focussed towards a particular direction.

Classic Anchor Chains also don’t detract from the pendant themselves as the link structure and formation is visually simple.

Turn the Tide our Marina Chain Link Collection

The Marina Chain notably shares the similarity with the Anchor Chain variation that features a Bar in the centre of each link. From a birds eye view it also retains an oval shape like the Anchor chain with the bar. However, the Marina Chain style itself is an adaptation characterised by its flatter depth. The Marina Chain has been adapted to beautify the Anchor Chain with a Bar with well-placed diamond cut areas of the link to enhance sparkle.

Our selection of Marina Chains are available in a range of widths from 2mm to 6.9mm wide, both in Bracelets and Chains. Each benefitting from Diamond Cut Links, the Marina Chain is one of the best looking Link styles that Diamond Cutting can be applied and the result is stunning.

Gucci Marina

Somewhat Puffed in appearance, with two holes on each side, in an abstract sort of way the Gucci Mariner takes the theme of other Nautical chains such as the Anchor Chain with a bar and the Marina Link Chain. The similarities lie with the inner two spaces of the link being clearly separated.

View our full Sterling Silver Marina Chain Necklace Collection Here

Make Waves with our Rope Chain Link Collection

On almost every Sea Vessel, regardless of size, you’re sure to find the use of Rope being incorporated into important uses. For Yachts you’ll find them being used to hoist the sails to catch the wind to progress further along the voyage across the seas and on Narrow Boats you’ll see them used to dock the boat when settling along the canals. In fact this Rope made from a group of fine fibres that collectively twist to form one of the most key tools is full of strength and has been a key piece of equipment for thousands of years.

This twisted shape itself is a defining feature of the Rope Chain and if you want to know more, check out our insightful Blog Post Twisted Sterling Silver Chain Styles.

If you’re looking to replicate as close as possible to a real Rope, it’s suggested to opt for a Classic Rope Link without any diamond cut links. These Rope Link styles retain the soft, twisted curves.

Within our current collection, you’ll find our Classic Rope Link available in a 1.2mm Chain with colours available in either dazzling Silver or precious 9ct Rose or Yellow Gold plating.

If you don’t mind a bit of extra sparkle, our thicker Rope Chains available in 1.8mm, 2.3mm and 4.7mm Wide Links each are complimented with optimally positioned Diamond Cut sections of Link. Just with out 1.2mm Rope Chain, our 1.8mm and 2.3mm thicknesses are additionally available with 9ct Yellow Gold plating.

What is a Box Chain Necklace?

If you haven’t heard of the style of Chain Link known as a Box Chain, now is a good as time as any to get acquainted with one of the most evolving chain styles in modern times. As one of the most recognised Chain Link styles, alongside the Curb, Belcher, Rope and Figaro the Box Chain is a truly timeless classic. Just like the vast majority of enduring Chain Link styles it’s name originates from its appearance.

The Heart of a Box Chain

At the heart of this classic style of link is a simple shape resembling a Box. You may think that it is far too basic a shape to have any charisma. But this 4 sided square shape with flat shiny surfaces when paired closely with another identical link, begins to forms the basis of an attractive and sleek chain link style. Whether you choose to admire it from the side, the top or the bottom you’ll find perfect symmetry all around. Available to wear as either Silver Chains or Silver Bracelets the Box Chain is also known as a ‘Venetian’ Chain Link style owing to it’s origins from the historically artisan city Venice, Italy. With such heritage, it’s easy to appreciate the reason why this chain style possesses a stylish yet natural allure.

The evolution of the Box Chain and the different types
Many of the classic chain styles that evolve into more exciting variations posses at their core a definable shape combined with a pattern in which the links pair with one another. The original Box Chain from which all Box Chains have evolved are from what is known as a Classic or Standard Box Chain. This is characterised by the following prominent features: 4 sides, flat square-shaped surfaces, highly polished and with straight edges. Here it is pictured below:

Having acquainted ourselves with the foundational shape from which all other Box Chain styles have evolved, this should now help us to move forward in comparing this alongside the varying incarnations of the Box Chain. You’ll also be able to see why these variations are so subtle that they make classing them as being within the same family of link and not an altogether different style.

So let’s begin starting with the most visually similar to the least in relation to the Standard Box Chain.

By Shape

By Shape

Standard Box Chain

As described above.

Mirror Box Chain

Almost identical to the standard Box Chain it may be difficult to identify the differences between them. But the main difference is that the Mirror Box Chain features these ‘Boxes’ much closer together with very little space between each link. Crafted in this way, the links allow for the flat polished surfaces to be closer to one another with hardly any visible gaps or spaces for light to pass through and disrupt the flow of shiny silver. With that the continuous flow of uninterrupted Silver thereby forms a Mirror effect. This type of chain is highly sparkly and great in narrower thicknesses to fashion with a pendant on a special occasion.

Rounded Box Chain

The crucial variation Rounded Box Links possess are their slightly domed shaped surfaces instead of a flat surface. Blending the curved surfaces and straight edges cleverly this is a sturdy chain that always fairs well with large statement pendants or lockets.

Double Box Chain

Interestingly, whilst the characteristic flat square surfaces are no longer visible with this variation, each of the links in this style are still identical to each other and they also possess a square shape, albeit not looking ‘boxy’ alone. When the Double Box Chain is deconstructed, each link can be described as being akin to square shaped rings (as opposed to round rings) with equal width and length.

So what makes this capable of still being classed as a Box Chain despite it’s alternative shape?

Well now you know what one link looks like, let’s take a look at the formation of the links, because this is where it really begins to form the signature Box shape. One of these ‘rings’ are placed down flat (horizontally) and another is then stacked onto this. With this stacking from a side profile the appearance of Silver forms a square shape: equal in length and height. To keep these two links in place the same combination of two links stacked upon each other are placed on one edge and then another two links on the opposite edge. Once the links are paired together, the signature cube shape is pronounced.

Another variation of the Double Box Chain also exists. The link formation is exactly the same as a standard Box Chain in that it is made of one link pairing with another single link, but instead of the surface appearing totally flat, there is a straight line groove. The appearance of the groove is designed to look like two links like the above mentioned Double Box Chain but is different because it is only the one link that pairs with the next, instead of two.

Triple Box Chain

Almost identical to the double Box Chain, except instead of two links stacked upon each other there are three.

The variation also includes the grooved version where the appearance on three grooves are etched into the flat surface.

Greek Box Chain

A quirky yet classy chain style, the Greek Box Chain is named because of it’s striking pattern that embraces shapes derived from Ancient Greece. Then Greek pattern is visible immediately when the chain is placed flat on the chest, wrist or dressing table, as shown below. The Box element however is specific again to the individual links. However the difference between the box links in this style compared with the Standard Box Chain (for which is a guide) is that the box shape has been somewhat sliced at a 45 degree angle. Owing to this angle allows for a more flatter chain. Instead of a plain surface our upcoming collection features the Greek Chain with a highly special surface imprinting, that features a silky texture, known as Pave.

Enhanced by Finish

All the above Box Chain descriptions cover the essential structure of the Box Chain links, however each of those Box Chain styles can also be complimented with additional jewellery finishing. Such finishing might include Diamond Cutting: a form of enhancing parts of the link to give a bright, high sparkling finish or imprinting patterns upon the link surface known as Pavé- as with our Greek Box Chain.

Why the Box Chain Links are so alluring: deeper shape meanings revealed..

Along with Circles, Triangles and Rectangles, the Square shape is a part of the geometric family of shapes. Geometric shapes are those that are symmetrical and accordingly reflect order and regularity and the Box Chain similarly uses straight edges and corners. This is in contrast to those link styles with curved or circular shapes which mentioned some time ago in our Blog Post on Twisted Chain Styles (in case you missed that blog post don’t worry you can catch it HERE).

There we also explained how different shapes are responsible for evoking different emotion. So are there any evocative emotions or symbolism associated with the Box Chain and if so what are they? With the Box Chain the square shape is the key focus. As a familiar shape it’s symmetry is formed through 4 equal lengths and 4 equal widths. This is in addition to equal 90 degree angles at each of its four corners.

As a result of this regularity and consistency it’s predictable nature equates to square shapes as having an air of honesty about them. As a shape commonly found in building architecture it’s no wonder that it can also be seen to also symbolise solidity, reliability and security. With its symmetry it is also said to denote conformity and conformity itself closely denoting peacefulness.

With such symbolism it’s a great style to have as part of your collection that will speak a subtle, meaningful style. This includes whether it’s worn as a Bracelet or a Chain though when paired with pendants matching similar themes of peacefulness, honesty and reliability such as those of sentimental or religious value it is sure to serve as a complete jewellery piece.

Box Chain Widths best suited for..

As the thickness of Box Chains get wider, the increase in width makes for a more visible filler look all around. So let’s take a look at recommended widths for Men and Women:

Women
At a minimum any fineness is acceptable, with the usual Standard box chains started from 0.8mm upwards and a maximum width needn’t be advised if as a Woman bold statement style jewellery is preferred. A good middle width for Women would be a 1.5mm width.

Men
A minimum width for men is likely to be advised at 1.5mm upwards, with no limit on the maximum recommended width. A good middle width would be a 2mm Box Chain.

If you haven’t by now been able to find reasons to opt for a Box Chain..Box Clever:

Box Chains are certainly chains that can be worn much more that the occasional wear and very well suited to everyday wear for functional and stylish reasons: They won’t catch hairs, will match any pendant and most styles of Box Chain aren’t overly flamboyant, though are very well capable to have a star factor when supplemented with careful jewellery finishing.

We hope this was a great guide to familiarise yourself with the Box Chain style and recognise it’s defining Square Shape, even when it may look slightly different in their evolved incarnations.

Top Trends for Men’s Silver Chains

Whilst in fashionwear trends evolve in cycles- whether seasonally, yearly or even longer, how often the scene changes can equally apply to whether it’s clothing itself or accessories such as jewellery. Precious metal jewellery however is a segment of jewellery, which features material that tends to be created with a longer period in mind. Specifically Platinum, Gold, Sterling Silver and more are the most recognised precious metals and related trends generally stick around a lot longer- at least a year or two. Very often some styles also go beyond all sense of time to form classic collections that defy the “in fashion” or “out of fashion” labelling and once you’ve formed a bond with the item it can last even longer and be passed on as heirlooms.

Opting for Mens Silver Chains are specific types of jewellery accessory that when worn naturally enhance an outfit. Whether that outfit is intended for an everyday wear look or that sharp occasional look that makes a unique statement, our collection of Mens Silver Chains will help complete a variety of looks and styles.

Whether you’re gifting jewellery for Men, or are a Man that is in pursuit for inspiration to evolve your Chain Game- this post will help you stay a step ahead in discovering the Top Trends for Men’s Silver Chains for 2019.

Here we’re splitting our Mens Silver Chain recommendations for 2019 into the following segments:

Top Unique Chain Styles

Top Chunky, Thick or Wide Chain Styles

Top Everyday Chain Styles

Top Chain Styles to wear on their own

Top Chain Styles to layer with necklaces

Top Mens Chain Styles for Pendant wear

Top Unique Chain Styles

Foxtail Chain Collection: The Twisted Foxtail Chain.
With the widest range of Foxtail Chains in the UK, this traditional style chain with V-shaped links that layer upon each other at the heart are offered in several varieties, but our Twisted Foxtail Chain is comprised of a style like no other with eye-catching link weaving crafted which supersedes the Chain outfield like no other. With carefully planned diamond cutting etched into the links that further catch the light elegantly and a texture that might form a habit of rolling between the fingers- this Chain is simply unplayable against when put head to head with any other Chain design. It’s a practical style of Chain too that has a generous weight, that will hold its shape whilst having a dynamic versatile movement, but give in easily to the kink of an Omega style chain nor catch the neck hairs that on some intricate styles that can make the toughest of us wince and irritable.

Top Chunky, Thick or Wide Chain Styles

Such above characteristics by nature of chains are almost in themselves a fashion trend and whilst what constitutes that thickness may be relative, when you’re looking at physically widely thick chains the style of chain is going to be bold enough to be noticed.

But what’s the use of being a wide chain of it isn’t great to look at. And if it’s going to be a wider chain why not too make a statement that to reflect the “heavy duty” look. Ourr Sterling Silver chains for Men are all made from solid Sterling Silver, and unlike hollow chains- feel weighty and look weighty.

So, what’s our recommendation?

Combining the twist shape of a timeless classic Curb Chain but with a solid bar in the middle of each link, the Marina Chain is an enviable choice. It isn’t an average joe and the design itself is basked with nautical themes relating to courageous, strong, determined sailors. How so? Well the Marina (also sometimes spelled as Mariner) chain embodies themes of a dependable chain full of tenacity, strength and substance because this chain link is used in supporting the weight of boats, ships and sea vessels alike.

Available in many variety of thicknesses, we recommend to opt for this Silver chain style at minimum in our 6.9mm Wide Sterling Silver Marina chain (also available in bracelet options for a complete themed look). It’s enough to show the depth of the link along with the diamond Cut sections that compliment and highlight the fortified charisma of each Link.

Top Everyday Chain Styles

When you’re wearing a Chain everyday you want to ensure that they’re practical which depends on your daily lifestyle. The following recommendations ensure a few bases are covered to ensure not only are you in comfort to wear but it remains on trend for 2019.

Day in, day out wear a Sterling Silver Rounded Box Chain. It is practical because it won’t catch your hairs and the shape of the Small Silver Square surfaces are highly reflective to mirror back light and any surface, and therefore not highly sparkling to draw over attention but enough to shout your style is full of precious metal substance. You can opt for any width with our 2mm and 3.7mm great choices. Want something slightly light to wear but not too thick? A 2mm is on the money.

Top Chain Styles to wear on their own

From our popular Foxtail Collection, this eye-catching 3.1mm Square Foxtail Chain, is a Sterling Silver Chain that is enough on it’s own that will be difficult for others to resist a compliment. It’s a style of chain that won’t be seen on the street frequently owing to it’s exclusivity at The Chain Hut and it’s talking point is the effect of it’s links that have a thoughtfully positioned Diamond Cut finish. Diamond Cutting is a process that essentially slices the surface of the link to give a precision straight edge and ultra flat facet. This finish essentially reflects light brightly though the intensity or consistency of the sparkle will vary from chain to chain depending upon which angles of the Chain it has been applied to. It has been trending well since it’s introduction and as a relatively undiscovered design is sure to trend well beyond 2019 too.

If you prefer less flash but something more sleek and round, the sleek Sterling Silver Rounded Foxtail Chain is fluid, versatile and will trend strong this 2019. Similar to a snake chain in the rounded shape but with significantly more detail through the characteristic interwoven V shapes of a Foxes tail. Such layered detail form the reason for the sleek high end luxury appearance which is almost a string of silver. The weight is moderate and holds its stance without any distortion when worn on the go. Quite the opposite to other chains that you may hear the clunks and metallic clinks that are crafted with individual links such as heavier or thick Curb or Figaro Chains if you’re running or jogging.

Top Chain Styles to layer with necklaces

It’s a good idea to ensure that when layering necklaces, you have a starting point. Layering necklaces can be endless when you’re creating your own stylish look- whether it be 2, 3 or more chain styles. When you’re creating this layered look with Chains, avoiding clash of styles or colours is always beneficial. Layering is essentially an art form mixing and matching different thicknesses of chain, different colours of chain, different styles of chain, as well as different positions of the chain on the chest: the chain length. Equally, it may be that you’ve already got a theme in mind too.

One thing is probably for sure- that you’ll be looking to fashion contrasting chain styles, where some styles will stand out and whereas others will perform the role as a best supporting act. Quite often the best supporting act chains are those that are your friend if you are in a rush and can’t make a decision in layering in that you can wear them on their own for a great effect. Essentially they won’t distract from another Chain you might be aiming to be the focus. Where as those playing the main role may be those where you want to focus the attention towards, whether it be because that main chain is thicker, has a lot of diamond cut sparkle or has a defined shape that you want to show off.

So what’s our recommended best supporting act Chain for 2019?

With silky smooth surfaces, with a slight domed shape our Rounded Box Chain as well as being great for daily wear as mentioned above, in the 3.7mm Wide option is mean, marvellous and reflects light well without the supplementation of diamond Cut links required. The shape, structure and size of the Rounded Box Chain links are large enough to be noticed but can either compliment another Chain with a diamond Cut finish or another Chain with a different thickness or contrasting shape such as a ball chain.

And for that of Main focus?

When you’re talking about trends specifically related to layering for 2019, we’d advise to opt for any classic diamond cut chain. Whether that’s a Diamond Cut Curb, Figaro or Marina Chain – the simpler the better.

Top Mens Chain Styles for Pendant wear

Our recommended Pendant Chain for 2019, is along with our 2mm Rounded Box Chain suggested for the everyday wear. Without any diamond cutting, it won’t detract from your pendant. However if your pendant is quite plain- opt for that of the contrasting Sterling Silver Marina Chain.

Gold Plated Chains & Necklaces on Sterling Silver

Whilst fashion trends in jewellery come and go, the taste for Gold in jewellery continues to stand firm in its different incarnations, whether rings, bracelets, chains, necklaces and more. In this blog post we’re going to explore this trend of Gold as used as a plating on Sterling Silver Chains and the evolving mindset towards Gold fashioned onto Sterling Silver Chains to create pieces that are just as spectacular as solid Gold Chains.

Natural attraction to Gold

Little explanation is required to know that Gold itself has been historically been valued highly by cultures all across the world over thousands of years in jewellery- whether in religious or cultural practices or as a reflection of status, such as Royalty. In fact many ancient cultures closely associate Gold with the Sun, and Royalty, with the Sun being the King and life giver on Earth and solar system, it’s not wonder Gold is almost engrained in mind to be valued quite highly.

Sourced from deep beneath the earth, this precious metal has undoubtedly been one of the highest valued materials on the planet and whilst it may be difficult to put into words a single reason for the attraction to this naturally bright yellow metal, one thing is for sure- when it’s crafted into jewellery it’s charm surely magnifies tenfold.

Gold Chains themselves can be vibrant whatever the purity of Gold from which it has been crafted- whether 24ct, 22ct, 18ct, 14ct or 9ct since each emanate a different shade of Yellow suitable to our own tastes. The only difference however between each level of these purities are the relative cost. 9ct Gold being less expensive and 24ct being higher owing to the purity and concentration of gold content increasing at each increment.

Since the price of Gold being assessed on its weight, and Gold now being at all time high (at least 5-6 times more than 20 years ago) when you’re looking to accessories with Gold Chains and Necklaces, an evolving trend has emerged that maintains the luxury of the Gold appearance, yet won’t cost the earth- Gold Plated Chains on Sterling Silver.

What are Gold Plated Sterling Silver Chains?

Exactly as stated, at the heart of the chain is another precious metal, Sterling Silver. The Sterling Silver Chain is then undergoes a procedure, known as plating that coats Gold on top of the surface of the Sterling Silver, leaving no trace of the Silver colour at all and the Sterling Silver remains underneath to provide durable and sturdy support.

But this shouldn’t be confused with other types of Gold plated chains which are not on made from Sterling Silver at the heart, but on metals which aren’t precious, and are cheaper base metals. Such items are essentially not classified as precious metal jewellery but fashion, or imitation jewellery that lack the special feel and do not possess the durable substance of those crafted with Sterling Silver at their foundation. They also usually lack the same weight and feel with the coloured tones wearing away relatively quickly. Essentially, those types are made from cheaper and low cost metals such as brass, copper or steel amongst others.

In any case Gold Plated Sterling Silver Chains aren’t just available in one specific type and can vary depending upon:

The Carat or purity of gold used to plate upon the Sterling Silver Chain - 24ct, 18ct, 9ct

The colour of the plating used such as Yellow Gold or Rose Gold

The grade or thickness of Gold plating

The Carat or purity of gold used to plate upon Gold Plated Sterling Silver Chains
As mentioned earlier on, Gold is available in a variety of carats. Carats in relation to Gold, is a term used to describe the proportion of Gold content is an item. Depending upon the carat of the Gold plating on the Sterling Silver Chain, the colour will vary. 24 carats is a bright yellow colour the same as that of Gold in it’s purest form as mined from the earth. At this stage is hasn’t been mixed with any other precious metals and 99.999% of it is Gold. Where as a 9ct item would be 37.5% Gold content.

Q. How do you use the carat of Gold to work out the percentage of Gold Content?
A. Without turning this into a post into maths, this percentage was calculated by taking 9 (9 for 9 carat), then dividing it by 24 and then multiplying that by 100. Why 24? 24 represents 24 carats, which is gold in it’s purest form. And of course, 100 to turn that into the percentage. Similarly if you wanted to know it for 22, 18 or 14 carat you can calculate it by replacing the 9 accordingly. In fact these numbers may even help when you look at jewellery with hallmarks and you see particular numbers stamped into them such as 375 (9ct gold), 750 (18ct Gold), 916 (22ct Gold).

Anyway, earlier we mentioned about Gold being mixed with other precious metals at carats below 24 carats. Why might Gold be added with other precious metals? Well, since Gold is a naturally soft metal, it can be difficult to work with in manufacturing and because of it’s soft nature, when paired with another precious metal it’s durability and longevity can be extended. This isn’t however so much a problem when it is plated on Sterling Silver jewellery, as opposed to when jewellery is made solely from Gold.

However, creating different carats of Gold isn’t just for the durability aspect. With various jewellery styles and fashion tastes, the varying brightness and tones of this Yellow Gold can be achieved to suit outfits, skin tones and other ideals. 24ct Gold being a shade of bright yellow , and 9ct Gold being a lighter yellow tone.

The colour such as Yellow Gold or Rose Gold
Gold plated Sterling Silver Chains aren’t only available in the natural Yellow shades of Gold either but also Rose Gold to match your existing jewellery, watches or other accessories. Our current range of Gold Plated Chains on Sterling Silver utilise a 9ct Gold Plate for both Yellow and Rose colours, with our Rose Gold Plated Chains benefitting from a hue of Rose gold that has been intentionally formulated to encompasses bright pink tones to reduce any coppery appearance. The colour is also so closely matched to Solid Gold Chains, with the great benefit of allowing you to pull off an expensive look

The grade of plating used
Knowing the grade of plating is essential to work out approximately how long the plating will last before it wears away. Plating is much itself a form of treatment onto a metal that essentially forms a barrier between the surface of the object and the air around it. How much space is in between that is known as the thickness of plating. The less plating there is, the less amount of time the colour will last before it wears away to expose the natural colour of the underlying material, in this case Sterling Silver.

However, the grade of plating used alone isn’t itself an indicator of how long the colour of Gold Plated Chain may last. In fact, depending upon the specific item itself and how it is cared for, how often it is used, or the environments it is exposed to can all have their effects. If an item is subject to continual rubbing then naturally over a period of time that layer of Gold plate may slowly reduce. Wearing away is usually gradual and may not always be equally worn away around the whole item – that depends upon how it is worn and wearing with pendants for example may wear away one area more than another.

On the other hand, it’s certainly also the case that if there is more depth of Gold plating then it will take that much longer before it fully wears away. So we need to know what the varying thicknesses of Gold that is plated on the Sterling Silver Chains.

There are various types to approaching the Plating method with Jewellery overall Whether it’s Gold Plated Chains, or other items of jewellery such as Wedding or engagement rings- a cheaper option known as Flash Plating and another methodical and carefully approached option intended to for better longevity. This other method of approach can be described as Micron Plating because it has been plated with a specific number of microns.

How are Sterling Silver Chains plated with Gold?
It’s important to quickly address this question before moving on to understand the differences between the two types of plating mentioned. Once a Sterling Silver Chain has been produced it is then galvanised with Gold by being drenched into a specially formulated liquid Gold and then several other processes.

Why is this important? What's the difference been Flash Plating and Micron Plating?
Well since Flash plating is mentioned the term Flash pretty much describe the duration that the Chain, in this case, will have been subjected to that liquid. Essentially Flash plating is just enough time to coat the surface, albeit quite thinly and economically to produce the desired colour, something similar to placing the object 'in and out'.

This is compared with Gold Plating that has a specified Micron level described. When an item is being plated, whether it be Gold or another metal such as Rhodium, to ensure proper consistency, a particular measurement is used to determine the level of thickness – known as Microns. 1 micron is equivalent to 0.001 millimetres. Whilst this may sound surprisingly thin, this is still a lot more than a flash plating and is certain to last a lot longer, relatively speaking. It's also a measured approach to ensure than the Gold Plating is equally the same all around the corners or contours of an item so that one area does not wear away faster than another, even when subjected to the same environment.

If there is more microns, does that mean my item will last longer?
Yes. But you should be aware that the thicker the micron you coat it with, the more expensive the item will be owing to the Gold use for the plating being real gold. Since Gold is higher in value the more you add the expensive it will become. Additionally, by increasing it many microns more, the difference in price between the plated item and a solid gold item may not be as much difference.

View our 9ct Gold Plated Chain Collection here

Our Current range of Gold Plated Chains available in 16 to 24" Inches length:

Yellow Gold:

Classic styles of chain link have names that have long stuck around for decades and are instantly familiar, and the Curb Chain is a part of the classic chain styles group. Where Fashion trends are historic and standards the basis for much jewellery in Italy and France, the curb is known as Grumetta and a Gourmette Chain respectively.

How is a curb chain made?

Like most of the classic styles of Chain Link, which have originated hundreds of years before any of the state of the art technology existed, the Curb chain links were crafted from a round wire that was cut to size and then twisted to create a link shape with distinctive grooves. These grooves allow another curb link of the same width, length and depth to sit snuggly in this little pocket and the pairing process is then repeated with until the right length was produced. From this one base shape, creativity and evolving technology has resulted in several varieties of this Curb Chain Link style to meet the latest fashion trends, but at the heart of the Curb Chain, lies that distinct link shape with two grooves on each side, and the formation of one link paired with another.

What are the different types & styles of Curb Chain Links?

Before we look at differentiating between the varieties of Curb Chains, it’s important to mention that we’re comparing the structurally modified shapes in comparison with the original, base curb link shape that is at the heart of Curb Chains - namely, the twisted shape with two deep grooves.

To make it easier to understand the varieties, we’ve separated them by how their varieties is noticeable since often a Curb can be a combination of any of these styles together. For example, a Curb Chain can be available as an Open Curb, be Single, have Diamond Cut Link finishing and be Solid and we’ll show you as we explain further:

It’s named is based specifically on the rounded curves of the Curb links that form it. This variety does not have any visibly flat edges that you might see on Diamond cut Curbs, because there has been no Diamond Cutting procedure applied on the links- a process by which the curved edges are sliced equally with a precision tool to enhance the reflectiveness of the surface to produce a sparkling finish. Before the links are twisted into shape, they crafted from either a solid or hollow cylinder-shaped wire/tube and the rounded surface is already formed before any twisting has occurred.

Open Curb also known as an Elongated or Cheval Curb
The Open Curb Chain Links are noticeably different in their shape, though of course retaining the grooves at each end of the link. Whilst the width of the Curb Links that make this style is consistently the same from end to end, the individual length of the link has been slightly stretched and opened up. The effect is most bet described as looking at the Figaro Chain. In a Figaro Chain you’ll notice a pattern that is made from series of short links (the normal close link) and a then a longer link. This longer link is actually an Open Curb link, and the open curb link is made simply of these longer links throughout. It’s also known as a Cheval Link Chain, Cheval being the French word for Horse.

Close/Closed Curb
The most popular and recognised variety of Curb Chain, the appearance can be simply be described by taking a look at the Figaro Chain, which is formed from a combination of the Open Curb Links and Closed Curb Links. The Close Curb Links are those which sit together in a group of at least 3 and therefore are linked together nearer to each other. The vast majority of our Curb Chain collection are of this variety.

Other Examples of the Closed Curb you might see:

Concaved Curb
Essentially, shaped like a closed curb, the centre links of the Curb Chain have been concaved and from a bird’s eye view, inwardly forms groove the runs from end to end upon the surface of the chain.

Square Curb
A style of Closed Curb Chain, the Square Curb Chain glorifies the style of straight lines on the edges and on the surface. It has a boxy appearance, and is the opposite of the round curb chain featuring curves, and the characteristic groove itself is easy to notice. The surface prominently features triangular shapes on each side of the link.

Flat Curb
If you've ever wondered why you might see or hear a curb chain being described as a 'Flat Curb', the 'Flat' is usually referencing the overall depth of the chain links. If a chain is a 'Flat' style then it should be advertised clearly, since these styles of Chain are not as heavy as the standard curb chains. When layed out on a surface, the Flat Curb Chain compared with a non-flat Curb Chain will have less depth, even though it may posses the same wideness (or width). Whereas the Length is a measurement of the Chain when opened out flat, from the clasp end to the other end to which it fastens, and the Width is that narrower measurement when looking at a birds eye view, the depth can be gauged properly when lying flat on a table at a side-profile view. Depending upon what style or feeling you're seeking, the benefits include: it can create the appearance of a wide chain from a birds eye view, be a lot lighter in weight and therefore generally cost less. The reverse of this is that, from side profile it may lack some chunkiness and overall weight.

(2) By Link Formation: Single Curb | Double Curb

Single Curb
Single Curb chain styles are those whereby each link is paired with one link and the pattern is repeated. Essentially, except for ends of each chain, each link will be paired with one proceeding it, and one following it.

Double Curb
Double Curb chain styles can vary in two ways. The first style is whereby two single curb links sit ontop of eachother and then link with another. The second is where there is a single link, but within that space two links on each side link fit inside that space.

(3) By Link Finishing: Pav Curb | Milled Curb | Diamond Cut Curb

Pave Curb
A style of Curb chain that utilises gemstones -synthetic or genuine. Depending upon the precious metal used to create the Curb chain links themselves, the stones are embedded within on the surface or the edges of the Curb link. Pave itself is a pattern of gemstone settings that refers to smaller stones being placed into the metal For Sterling Silver Curb Chains, in this rare Pave style, you’ll likely see the paired stones to be predominantly Cubic Zircon or synthetic stones. This is because the stones themselves are a lot cheaper, not being genuine gemstone, and therefore the end cost of the item being more affordable. This is compared with genuine more expensive gemstones such as Diamonds which will be paired with a more expensive White Gold, Platinum or Yellow Gold precious metal Curb Chain.

Milled Curb
The radiant and sparkling effect of Milled Curb is similar to that of a Pave Curb – on the surface it has the appearance that stones are set. But no gemstones are set within this chain. In fact this clever method, known as Milling, involves a Metal block with grooves, that are then rolled over the length of a chain and leave a pattern of imprints resulting in this low maintenance, worry free – sparkling appearance. The great benefit of this style, is that the wearer can wear this Curb Chain everyday, without worrying about stones being displaced if it accidentally sustains continual knocks- unlike a Pave Curb Chain.

Diamond Cut Curb
With this style of Curb Chain it’s first important to explain that Diamond Cutting itself is a specific process by which a surface is sliced ever so precisely to create a highly polished surface with a diamond-tipped tool. It’s applicable to almost any precious metal jewellery (and gemstones) so long as a surface exists. Whether it be Chains, Pendants, Bracelets, Earrings and more and with Curb Chains, specifically asking for a ‘Diamond Cut Curb Chain’ is still quite a broad request. This is because the Curb Chain link itself has a generous number of surfaces and edges of which are free to be ‘cut’ or ‘facetted’ on any section as per the creator’s choice. Should diamond cutting be applied to the surface of a Curb Chain, but not the edges, the end appearance created can be vastly different. For example, below is a Round Curb Chain with 2 Sides of the surface with Diamond Cutting. Where as another here has 4 sides diamond cutting, turning the originally Rounded Curb Chain with curved edges, straight edged.

(4) By Link Structure: Hollow Curb | Solid Curb

Hollow Curb
The Hollow Curb Chain shape is that of the Rounded Curb, and therefore appearance wise there is no visible difference. The difference however lies within the actual formation of the link. The links of a Hollow Curb Chain or Bracelet will have started as a silver cylinder shaped tube, with hollow space inside that tube. That space inside is the hollow bit which can’t be seen, but only noticed when felt or weighed. These types of chains are popular when looking to save some money as it’s make up contains less silver, but still gives the appearance on the surface of a similar Solid Chain- and will feel naturally a lot more lighter. It’s also far more likely that you’d find Thicker chains being Hollow than fine chains, owing to it being physically impossible to achieve a hollow space in a fine wire. The potential drawback of the Hollow Curb variety is the overall longevity and durability of the links- since the hollow space inside means the link can be less fortified and overtime, (with silver being a softer precious metal by nature) it may break earlier than a solid Curb Chain. Additionally, if there is a breakage it’s far more difficult to repair owing the any solider not being able to form properly due to the hollow tube space. At The Chain Hut to ensure maximum durability and longevity all of our jewellery with Curb Chains and Curb Bracelets are solid and not Hollow.

Solid Curb
Solid Curb Chains will of course vary in their sizes, from fine, moderate, thick and thicker but unlike the hollow Curb, Solid Curb chains are crafted from a solid wire, without any vacant or ‘hollow’ space beneath the surface, creating better durability and longevity. The majority of fine Curb chains – those with a thinner appearance in their width- are very likely to be crafted from a solid wire, since it is physically difficult to produce a wire with such a narrow hollow space. As mentioned above, that hollow chains save silver weight making a thicker chain less expensive, but with finer chains in particular there makes little sense in doing the same since the overall metal spaced saved is quite minimal and would not saving much cost. At The Chain Hut all of our Chains from our Curb Chain Collection are Solid Curb Chains.
